How to Land a WordPress Developer Role in 2025
Tips on building your portfolio, skills to prioritize, and how to stand out in the WP job market.
The WordPress job market is more competitive than ever — but so is the opportunity. With over 43% of websites running WordPress and constant demand for developers who understand both the platform and modern web development patterns, the talent gap is real.
Skills That Matter Now
Agencies and product companies hiring in 2025 have shifted their expectations. Classic PHP/WordPress knowledge is still table stakes, but the developers who stand out are those who:
- Know Gutenberg deeply — block development, FSE, and theme.json are no longer optional.
- Understand modern JavaScript — React, TypeScript, and the block editor's architecture.
- Work with REST API and WPGraphQL — headless WordPress has gone mainstream.
- Write clean, tested PHP — OOP patterns, hooks architecture, and code review literacy.
Build a Portfolio That Speaks for Itself
Most developers list projects without context. What hiring managers want is the story: what problem did you solve, how did you approach it, and what trade-offs did you make?
For each portfolio project, include the brief, your solution, the technical stack, and — if possible — a live link or GitHub repo. Two or three deep case studies beat a dozen surface-level screenshots every time.
Where the Jobs Are
Beyond generic job boards, the best WordPress roles are on niche platforms, in agency-specific job pages, and inside WordPress community spaces (Slack groups, Post Status, Underscores community). Many of the best contracts never get posted publicly — start building relationships before you need them.
Application Tips
Tailor your cover note to the stack and size of each employer. A five-person agency hiring a senior developer cares about autonomy and communication. A 50-person product company cares about scalability and process fit. Show you've actually read the job description — it's rarer than you'd think, and it shows immediately.
